I promised my favourate Mark Twain quote: “What work I have done I have done because it has been play. If it had been work I should not have done it. Who was it who said, ‘Blessed is the man who has found his work?’ Whoever it was, he had the right idea in his mind. Mark you, he said his work- not somebody else’s work. The worl that is really a man’s own work is play and not work at all. Cursed is the man who found some other man’s work and cannot lose it. When we talk about the great workers of the world we really mean the great players of the world. The fellows who groan and sweat under the weary load of toil that they bear never can hope to do anything great. How can they when their souls are in a ferment of revolt against the employment of their hands and brains? The product of slavery, intellectual or physical can never be great.”
So what is my work? It’s people and community development. I am passionate about communication, education reform, entrepreneurship. I want to reach as many people as I can in my lifetime but at times it happens one person at a time.
Last weekend my friend Tonde told me that he was stopped by this beautiful, sophisticated looking girl who claimed to know him. When he expressed doubt she mentioned me and another friend, Oscar. That puzzled me because not so many people know the three of us collectively.
The girl then told Tonde her name was Tanya. The moment Tonde said that I remembered who she was. We met Tanya begging in a park in town. She was homeless, very sick and had not bathed in weeks. We introduced her to Jesus and organised a temporary job at a cultural festival in town and we forgot about her. Tanya told Tonde how she changed her life with what she had earned. Short story- Tanya could not stay and chat with Tonde, she was rushing to work!
