A Tribute To The Future

I count myself blessed to lead a group of young people. I have the great opportunity of speaking into their lives every week.

When we started, some of them had no sense of identity and no toungible hope. It has been a wonder to see them blossom and begin to see the endless possibilities of hope, significance and contribution. I am more convinced now than I have ever been that love can change the world. It is my privilege to love this group. Teenagers and young adults from the most uninspiring backgrounds and circumstances are becoming shining stars right before my eyes, what a spectacle!

I appreciate the trust and confidence they have in me, to allow me to speak into their lives. It is humbling to share in the process of shaping a future.

I will mention by name 25 of the more consistent members of this group as a tribute to them. A tribute to the lives they will touch and change in the exciting future ahead of them:

Easy Does It

Today my post is just a short note of cautio:

Be careful that your desire for an outcome becomes so huge that it overshadows your morality and dignity. Principles should be determined and entrenched within you before the moment of decision because in that moment emotion will be too heavy to permit you to be objective.

Every time I have decided to suffer loss, embrace pain or miss an “opportunity” because of principle it has been a painful decision but I know it adds to my character and reputation equity. A good name is better than silver or gold.

Take it easx, you will get there. The route is as important as the destination, they lie when they say the end justifies the means. You may seem a fool but as long you have internal respect it dosen’t matter. Easy, does it!

The One Meaningful Question to Ask of God

AS USUAL ON FRIDAYS I HAVE A GUEST CONTRIBUTOR. MY GUEST THIS WEEK IS THE APOSTLE PAUL!!!

THE 8TH CHAPTER OF HIS LETTER TO THE ROMANS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURATE CHAPTERS IN THE BIBLE. I SHARE SELECTED PORTIONS BELOW, PLEASE READ IT IN FULL..

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh…

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you..

For as many as are lead by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God…

For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance…

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose…

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

THAT LAST PART IS REALLY ONE QUESTION THAT IS MEANINGFUL TO ASK GOD. HE GAVE THE ULTIMATE, A PAINFUL GIFT TO HIMSELF, HOW SHALL HE NOT GIVE YOU OTHER STAFF?

Comparison: Death of Excellence

I don’t believe in dreams described by words like first, youngest, most. If Obama’s dream was to be the first black president of the US, then he got his dream 4years ago and he deserves no one’s respect. If however his dream was to contribute, it will continue even after 2016.

In Zimbabwe right now there is an unhealthy drive towards attribution as opposed to contribution. How many people do you know, who are sitting on urgently needed solutions because they want to do the fixing themselves? They are not concerned with contributing to a solution, they want the solution attributed to them. Some are praying that no one notices the broken window and fix it until they are able to do it themselves and be the hero! Selfish!

When you compare yourself to those who are seemingly better than you, it may destroy your own ambition. Be inspired by those ahead of you but never compare yourself to them, it may leave you feeling inadequate. You are unique and there is a unique space for you. If you are too busy coverting other people’s spaces, yours will remain unfilled. Achievement of a more excellent society is killed.

If your objective is to be better than those around you, you may sell yourself too short. I don’t care much if I’m the best in the world or not, I just want to be the best I can be. If I am not utilising my full potential then I am failing even though I may be better than everyone else. The word “better” smells of compromise and I have no respect for that.

I’m no perfectionist, those who know me, know that I always build the plane as I fly it. I am driven to be the best I can be, enhance my capacity and to improve the community around me to the best of my ability.

Are you the best that you can be at this time, under your current circumstances?

Strength

SORRY FOR NOT BLOGGING SINCE LAST THURSDAY. I FELL INTO A SUDDEN ACUTE ILLNESS ON FRIDAY. THANX TO GOD’S FAITHFULNESS I AM ALMOST FULLY RECOVERED NOW. MY GUEST ON FRIDAY WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A VERY LOVELY LADY FROM NEWZEALAND. HER NAME IS RACHEL. WHAT I LIKE MOST ABOUT HER IS THAT SHE IS AUTHENTIC AND PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT SHE DOES. FOLLOW HER ON TWITTER: @waitingisbest. OK ENOUGH WITH THE INTRO, HERE’S RACHEL:

For so long I believed, strength was never showing weakness. I thought that if you showed emotion you were weak. So I learned to be tough, I was the girl that never cried, that never needed help… Never told anyone my struggles. I learned to silence my emotions… But the smile on my face was never real… Deep down I was hurting but I couldn’t let people see my pain. God took me to a place where I was broken. Where I had to stop relying on my own strength, let go of the control and let God heal me.

It has been a difficult path but God has shown me that real strength is when we let others see our weaknesses, to say I struggle, I need help. This is bravery. We don’t always have to be strong. It’s ok to cry… God wants us to share each other’s burdens. To help lighten each other’s load. Don’t ever feel that you are weak for feeling pain…

Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and but burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Seeking First the Kingdom

I don’t think that seeking first the kingdom is a matter of chronology but rather it is a matter of attitude and focus.

When it’s interpreted in terms of chronology, all it then means is that it is something to be suffered in anticipation of something more desirable. This is hugely inaccurate! When we take seeking first the kingdom in chronological terms, it fixes in our minds an idea that there will come a time when we no longer need to seek the kingdom because “all things have been added,” which would have been the objective. When we think like this we deceive ourselves. This perspective incorrectly that seeking first the kingdom is a pain that has to be endured to get what we want.

Seeking first the kingdom is really about attitude, focus and priority. We don’t seek first the kingdom so that “all these things” get added to us, rather they are added to us because we are seeking first the kingdom. It is not a time bound discipline to be practiced until breakthrough or to be abandoned if breakthrough seems illusive. It is a lifelong committment, a lifestyle. It is not a means to an end but rather should be the begining and end of who you are. All these things will be added, not as a reward but because they are really inseparable from the lifestyle of seeking God first.

We seek first the kingdom on a moment to moment and decision to decision basis. This lifestyle comes from a realisation that God is our loving creator with our best interests at heart. This is how “all these things” are added, not as a reward but because God wants us to have an abundant life which is only possible when we seek Him at every turn. Interesting thing is, when these things come they can’t make you more joyful because in seeking him our joy is complete. So from wherever you are, your joy can be complete!

Meaningful Aid: The Man, The Fish and The Donor

Providing relief to the poor, the sick or those who suffer in other ways is noble and appropriate at times but it shouldn’t be the major focus. Focus should be sustainable development.

I believe sustainable development starts from the recipient. If they can’t be bothered about your solution or do not even realize they have a problem, your plan is doomed. An analysis of level of awareness of problem is neccessary. If there isn’t any, create it, if you can’t, dump your noble efforts and go somewhere else or do something else. Don’t take it personal- you’re a good person!

There’s a story of church folks who helped a widow move in. They went on to arrange her kitchen for her, it took them 1hr. It took her 8hrs to undo what they had done after they left. If only they had asked first! There’s another story of some good decent people who were concerned about the women of a certain village walking about with breasts bared. They donated t-shirts to all the women only to wake up tomorrow to see every donated t with two holes at convenient positions!

Yes if you give a man a fish, you only feed him for a day. But before you teach him how to fish consider this: Just because the man likes eating fish, does it mean he likes fishing fish? You may teach him to fish and be annoyed when he keeps coming to you for fish. A skill without an internal motivation to use it except hunger is useless. This is why the traditional aid model fails time and time again. It tries to prescribe developmental assistance to societies without diagnosis.

My model is social entrepreneurship. My targets are not beneficiaries, they are clients. I don’t run non profits, I run businesses. Our job is to make developmental objectives profitable. The process is driven by our clients. If we fail them we make a loss, not merely a donor agency’s money!
